Bixby’s Walker Nelson
For Walker Nelson, tennis is more than just a sport — it’s a lifestyle built on seven years of dedication at Genesis Riverside.
The Bixby High School Spartans varsity player has developed into a well-rounded athlete under the guidance of multiple coaches who have shaped his game.
“There have been many coaches including Gustavo Pinho, Tomas Descarrega, Bruno Santa’Anna, and Camilo Sabogal that have helped me reach the level I am today,” Nelson said.
While Nelson competes in both singles and doubles, he has a clear preference for the latter format.
“I play both singles and doubles. While I play both, I prefer doubles because I enjoy the teamwork and the energy of having a partner on the court,” he said.
That team-first mentality extends beyond the baseline. Nelson is a member of the National Honor Society and credits teammate Max Beard as the squad’s most vocal leader. He also praised his coach Bruno for keeping practices light while maintaining high standards.
“The person who keeps everyone laughing is my coach, Bruno, who makes practices more enjoyable while still pushing us to work hard,” Nelson said.
Off the court, Nelson excels academically, with math being his favorite subject. He fondly remembers his sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Roberts, for making learning both fun and challenging.
When not studying or competing, Nelson stays active through golf, fishing and pickleball, always finding ways to hang out with friends.
Nelson continues to refine his game, building on his strongest weapon.
“One of the strengths of my game is my forehand, as it is consistent and allows me to control points. I am currently working on improving my serve so I can become a more well-rounded and effective player,” he said.
The lessons learned through athletics extend far beyond the court for Nelson.
“Athletics has taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, persistence, and discipline. It has also shown me that it’s important to have fun and enjoy what you’re doing, which is something I will carry with me later in life,” Nelson said.
