Bixby’s Kourtney Wright

Kourtney Wright has lived in Bixby for her entire life. Now a junior she truly loves how the school program has shaped her into the player she is today. She has played basketball all her life and has enjoyed every minute of it.                                                                         

“I’ve been playing since I started walking,” she said.

Her dad and brother were the main people who got her into the sport, and they helped her develop her love for basketball from a young age. On the court, Kourtney plays shooting guard, a position she really enjoys.                                                    

“I love the three ball,” she said.

She can handle the ball when the team needs her to, but knocking down shots from the outside is her favorite part of the game. What really makes basketball special for her is the environment she’s surrounded by every single day.

“My favorite part of Bixby Basketball is the culture and family we’ve created. Every day I’m with people I love, and it makes me love what I do even more.” Kourtney said.

This past year has come with its ups and downs. In June, Kourtney underwent ACL surgery, but she attacked the challenge head-on.                                        

“It was a major hurdle, but something that’s only made me stronger,” she said.

Through it all, her team and community were by her side. Her dad has always been her biggest supporter through good and bad.            

“He was my coach, now my trainer, and my dad all in one. I have no idea where I’d be without him.” Kourtney added.

With the season ahead, Kourtney’s has several goals she would like to achieve. For her team goal, she wants the biggest prize of all: a State Championship and a gold ball in March. Her personal goal is to hit a huge milestone 1,000 career points. One of her favorite memories so far came during her freshman year, when Bixby made an unexpected run to the state tournament.                                                  

“Doing something nobody thought we could do was an indescribable feeling,” she said.

Balancing everything isn’t always easy, but Kourtney is thankful to have her college classes online, making it easier to fit school around practices and games. Her favorite class is strength and conditioning, where she gets to bond with teammates while improving together. When she looks ahead, Kourtney already knows her plan. She wants to play Division 1 basketball. Her advice to future athletes is encouraging.                 

“Stick to the process and never give up on your dream. Most importantly, trust yourself.”
