Q&A with Bixby’s McKinly Kayser – Presented by Rain Tech Roofing

By Elizabeth Contreras

VYPE: What grade are you in, and how long have you been cheering?
McKinly Kayser: I’m a junior at Bixby High School. I’ve been cheering for 7 years.

VYPE: What position or role do you usually have on the team?
MK: My role throughout cheer has always been a flyer. Since joining cheer in high school, I have enjoyed being a coed flyer as well.

VYPE: What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader?
MK: I enjoy getting to see how my hard work pays off. It is rewarding when hard work turns into new skills.

VYPE: What has been your favorite memory with your cheer team so far?
MK: As a team, we hit zero at regionals, which was an exciting time. Also, winning the state football championship against Owasso.

VYPE: What’s the most challenging part of cheer for you, and how do you overcome it?
MK: The hardest part of cheer is the mental mindset. You must remain mentally tough, not just physically.

VYPE: Have you received any special recognitions, nominations, or honors in cheerleading?
MK: During NCA camp this year, I was awarded 2 special honors. I tried out along with 6 other teammates and made All American Cheer! At the end of camp, the NCA staff selects 1 recipient of the Pin it Forward award, and I was chosen. This award goes to the cheerleader who demonstrates spirit, kindness, respect, commitment, and motivation during camp. Hard work does pay off.

VYPE: What are your plans after high school, and do you see cheer being a part of your future?
MK: I plan to attend OU to study pre-med and become a doctor. I would like to continue cheering as long as I can and see where it takes me in the future.

VYPE: Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or piece of advice that inspires you in cheer?
MK: My favorite quote is 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” I know He is in control and that comforts me.

VYPE: If you could describe your cheer experience in one word, what would it be and why?
MK: Opportunity – Cheer opens opportunities whether it’s connecting with my teammates, classmates, and even the community.
