VYPE: What grade are you in, and how long have you been running cross country?
Tatum Penland: I am a sophomore and have been running cross country since sixth grade.

VYPE: What do you love most about competing in cross country?
TP: I love working hard during the off season then seeing it pay off at meets when you set a new personal record or place well.

VYPE: Cross country requires a unique kind of mental toughness. How do you stay focused and motivated during races and tough training days?
TP: When training gets hard, I just remember that each rep of the workout will make me stronger and faster.

VYPE: What has been your most memorable moment in your cross country career so far?
TP: At regionals last year our whole team qualified for state. It was the first time in several years and getting to celebrate together was so exciting.

VYPE: What is your favorite course to race on and why?
TP: I loved running at Chile Pepper in Arkansas. It’s a popular race with high schools from several states and music was playing the whole time.

VYPE: Do you have any pre-race rituals or routines?
TP: Before every race I pray and ask that God would take away my nerves and help me to have a fast and fun race.

VYPE: What goals have you set for yourself this season, individually and for your team?
TP: This season I have a goal to break 19 minutes in the 5k, and I would love to make it to state as a team again.

VYPE: Who has had the biggest impact on your running journey?
TP: My parents have had the biggest impact. They got me into running and are always cheering for me the loudest on race day. My mom also does many runs with me.

VYPE: How do you manage the pressure and expectations that come with being a competitive runner?
TP: Most of the pressure I feel comes from myself. I want to see how fast I can get. I try to have fun before races and remember that my identity is not in running.
