The Bixby Spartans have one goal in mind for the upcoming baseball season. Helping the team reach that goal is sophomore Barrett Standley.

Like many of his peers, Standley started playing the game at a young age and has continued to work on his skills throughout the years.

“My strength in my skill set is how I swing the bat and some improvements are just tiny adjustments that I’ve made to my swing,” said Standley.

Head coach Dean Wilson said the team is hungry for a state title despite graduating a few main pieces of the team. Standley was a freshman last season who coach Wilson said made an impact despite his age.

“Barrett was a huge part of our offense last year, leading the team in average (.415), OBP (.491) and SLG (.543) as a freshman. A switch-hitting outfielder who has shown plus tools. Ranked the #6 overall 2027 grad in Oklahoma by PBR Oklahoma,” said Wilson.

For Standley, being around his teammates and competing at a high level is what it is all about.

“I love how they push me to be better and how they treat me like a brother even though I’m an underclassman,” Standley said. “Bixby is a great place for me as a student-athlete because of the strength program, and all the coaches want the best for you.”

Standley was quick to point out other teammates who are making strides to help this team win that state title.

“I’m impressed with all my teammates. They all look better from when we started and continue to improve and as a whole, we’re all ready to get going,” said Standley.

To prepare himself for competition, Standley said he takes a moment to pray and settle his thoughts.
“I mentally prepare by praying to God before my games,” Standley said. “My inspirations off the field are God and my family. They strive for my success and do so much for me.”

Standley hopes to one day play college baseball and ultimately turn pro.
