While Jenks and Union dominated Class 6A for over 20 years, it’s been the Bixby Spartans for a decade making headlines in mid-December. Going back to their first entry into 6A football, the Spartans have amassed 10 gold balls since 2014. Meanwhile Jenks and Union are hiring new coaches after Keith Riggs (Jenks) and Kirk Fridrich (Union) both stepped down has head coaches and will continue working with their respective schools as Associate Athletic Directors.
Loren Montgomery is no stranger to big games. As an assistant under Allen Trimble at Jenks High School, Montgomery was part of a staff that brought several state titles back to Jenks America. His run at Bixby is historic and the community of Bixby is supporting the program in record numbers. Montgomery has solidified himself as a Hall of Fame coach and one of the best to ever do it Oklahoma.
Early in the 2024 season, the Spartans did not appear to have the same swager as in years before. In the opening week of football, Owasso defeated Bixby putting the Rams on a path to an undefeated season. Until they faced that same Spartan team in the Class 6A finals.
The contest would go into overtime. A fitting end for two teams destined to face one another. The Spartans were down by a point after scoring a touchdown on their possession in OT. In one of the gutsier calls you will see in football, coach Montgomery went for a two-point conversion for the win.
Cooper Parker took the snap and busted into the endzone for the conversion giving the Spartans a, 43-42 win over the Rams.
Bixby finishes the season 11-2 while Owasso takes home the runner-up trophy at 12-1.
