Bixby catcher Mackenzie Howard has grown up in the middle of one of Oklahoma’s most competitive athletic environments, and she would not have it any other way. A varsity contributor for the Spartans, Howard has embraced both the expectations that come with the program and the behind-the-plate responsibility that shapes every inning.
“Bixby is saturated with crazy athleticism in all sports so to be associated with such an incredible program is special,” Howard said. “I’ve played softball since I was 10. The most important part of being a catcher to me is making sure bad things that happen on the field don’t affect my team’s attitude or approach.”
Her mom’s consistency is a daily reminder that there is always another level to reach, even when it means giving something up to get there.
“My mom inspires me. She is always working hard and showing me that I can always do more.”
Howard has spent the offseason stacking competition and conditioning, determined to sharpen every part of her game while still finding time to simply be outdoors and active.
“This summer I’ve been in tournaments back-to-back. When I’m not playing, I’m usually working out or doing something outside.”
She credits the culture around her for pushing those standards, from the way Bixby teams support each other to the teammates who have modeled what extra work really looks like. One former Spartan in particular showed Howard the value of never being satisfied with “good enough.”
“A former teammate that left an impression is Emerson Friedrichsen. She always goes above and beyond to put in more work and be the best she can,” Howard said. “My favorite part about my team is how we get long and how everyone is willing to help each other.”
She wants to continue her softball career at the next level and pair it with a field of study that reflects her interest in how people think, respond and grow under pressure.
“I want to play softball in college and possibly study psychology.”
