Emma Wilson is entering her senior season with Bixby High School volleyball, bringing experience, leadership and a deep appreciation for the team culture that defines the program.
Wilson, who will be a senior this fall, credits much of her mindset and approach to the sport to professional volleyball player Jordan Thompson.
“She’s a professional volleyball player, and I really admire her leadership and how selfless she is with her teammates,” Wilson said.
That emphasis on selflessness is something Wilson sees reflected within her own team. For her, the strongest part of Bixby volleyball is not just talent, but trust.
“I love my teammates,” she said. “They make Bixby Volleyball so much fun, and I love how close our team is.”
Wilson described a group dynamic built on connection and accountability, where players rely on one another both on and off the court.
“The connection we all have,” she said. “I trust every one of my teammates, and I know they always have my back. Everyone is supportive, fun, and focused on the team rather than themselves.”
On the court, Wilson points to teammates who stand out in specific roles. She named Anistyn Wondra as the team’s top setter, while highlighting Jocelyn Wilson as the most vocal presence and Laila Jackson as the player who keeps the energy light.
Meanwhile, Bebe Hancock earns recognition for her relentless effort.
“She’ll dive into the bleachers if it means keeping the ball alive,” Wilson said.
Wilson’s own playing style reflects consistency and reliability. She prefers a standing serve, valuing control over flash.
“It’s simple, consistent, and what I’ve always been comfortable doing,” she said.
Beyond individual skills, Wilson said athletics have helped shape her perspective on life. She emphasized mental toughness as one of the most important lessons she has learned through competition.
“Athletics has taught me mental toughness,” she said. “But it has also shown me that if you work hard for what you want, good things can come from it even if things don’t always go exactly as planned.”
That resilience is especially important when facing tough opponents. For Wilson, matches against Jenks stand out as the most challenging.
“It’s always just a tough competitive atmosphere because we all know each other since we live close, but we also all want to win,” she said.
