Anistyn Wondra is still early in her high school career, but the Bixby varsity volleyball player is already shaping her identity both on and off the court through resilience, teamwork and a grounded perspective on success.
Entering her junior year, Wondra brings experience, energy and a strong sense of purpose to a team she joined as a transfer. While stepping into a new environment can be uncertain, she said the transition has been smoother than expected.
“Being a new transfer, I had no idea what it would look like and if I would fit in,” Wondra said. “Thankfully I had a couple previous teammates from club that welcomed me into the team with open arms. I didn’t expect to get so close with everyone so fast.”
That bond, she believes, is one of the team’s greatest strengths. Whether in practice or competition, Wondra values the atmosphere her teammates create.
“No matter what is going on, we’re always going to have fun,” she said. “Everyone is always smiling or laughing and just enjoying each other’s presence.”
Wondra plays setter, a position that demands precision and composure under pressure. It has also taught her one of the most important lessons she carries with her.
“It is OK to fail,” she said. “Volleyball is a game of mistakes, first one to get to 25. Nobody is perfect.”
Her approach reflects both maturity and perspective, shaped in part by the influence of her mother, who she calls her biggest inspiration.
“She’s the strongest person I know,” Wondra said. “She’s gone through so much, including beating breast cancer twice, and continues to lead with grace and compassion.”
On the court, Wondra embraces an aggressive style, particularly with her serve.
“I’m a jump serve girl through and through,” she said. “I’ve been jump serving since I was 11. As a smaller player, I need to get as much strength and power behind the ball to make the serve tough.”
She also draws motivation from her teammates, highlighting players like Brylee “Bebe” Hancock for her relentless effort and Paisley Potwora and Emma Wilson for their vocal leadership.
