The Lady Spartans were just a couple of points shy of hoisting the state championship trophy last season. But this year’s version of the team is ready to get back out there and finish the job. The team has all five returning starters back along with some other key players. Taking a leading role again this season will be the trio of Alyssa Nielsen (6-0, Sr.), Meredith Mayes (6-3, Sr.), and Gracy Wernli (5-9, Sr.).
Last season, Wernli averaged 13.8 points and 3.3 rebounds, Mayes had 12 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game, and Nielsen registered 10.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. These three girls are all three-year starters for Bixby and have led their team to two consecutive state runner-up finishes and they will all be playing basketball at the collegiate level.
Another impact player for the team is Gentry Baldwin (5-7, Sr), who is also a three-year starter and will be playing college basketball. She is the team’s point guard and floor general. Her absence on the court is the most impactful on the team’s output. Brynn Daniel (5-8, Jr.) started last year as a sophomore and played outstanding defense and rebounded. An incoming freshman that will be looking to play a role is Kate Wernli (5-10, Fr.) with nice size, a solid shot, and a good basketball IQ.
Kassidy Blankenship (5-2, Sr.), Bailey Wilson (5-10, So.), Ama Musick (5-8, So.), Mady McClure (5-9, Sr.), Sarah Beltran (5-2, So.), and Sadie Beltran (5-8, Sr.) are other members of the team that will be looking for playing time and working to make an impact.
