Freshman pitcher Klein Vann is already making her presence felt on the Bixby High School varsity softball team, bringing confidence, composure and a team-first mindset to the field.
Vann, a ninth grader, credits much of her approach to the game to standout Jordy Bahl-Frahm, who inspires her both on and off the field.
“I love the way she represents herself and her composure on the pitching mound,” Vann said. “She is true to herself, loves her family and has strong faith.”
That same steady mentality is something Vann strives to replicate in her own role as a pitcher, a position she says comes with unique mental challenges.
“The most difficult thing about pitching is not getting in my own head,” she said. “I have to remind myself that every pitch is a new pitch and to stay confident in my ability.”
Despite being one of the younger players on the roster, Vann said the transition to varsity has been made easier by the team’s welcoming environment.
“I love how everyone gets along and how welcoming the older girls are to freshmen,” she said. “I love everyone’s passion for the game and am excited for this upcoming season.”
That chemistry extends beyond game situations. Vann describes Kenzie Howard as the team’s most vocal leader, while Heidi Gruenwald keeps spirits high with humor. And when it comes to postgame cleanup, she quickly points to McKinley Tilton as the player most likely to have the dirtiest uniform.
On the field, Vann keeps her approach simple, especially at the plate.
“Take a deep breath, step in the box and swing hard,” she said.
She values time with family and friends, often visiting her grandparents, spending time at the barn or swimming when she is not playing softball. In the classroom, Vann enjoys math and credits former teacher Rebecca Rickelman as a lasting influence.
“She helped me through middle school as well,” Vann said.
As she continues her high school career, Vann said the lessons she has learned through athletics already extend beyond the diamond.
“Attitude and effort are everything,” she said.
It is a mindset that reflects both maturity and determination and one that suggests Vann’s impact at Bixby is only just beginning.
