When Ashley Jones’ oldest son, Andrew, started wrestling in the summer between fifth and sixth grade, her first thought was “I know nothing about this sport.” Fast forward five years and Jones not only knows the sport but is one of the Bixby wrestling program’s biggest supporters.
“My first few years with school wrestling they would ask for volunteers and I’d show up,” she says. “Last year, I started serving as treasurer for the booster club board and have gotten more and more involved. I’ve always been one that believes, if I’m going to be there to watch my kids, I need to help in some way.”
While the Jones family is relatively new wrestling, Ashley has seen it make a positive impact in her kids’ lives.
“Wrestling shows them they can do hard things,” she said fighting back tears. “Wrestling is unlike any sport I’ve seen. It’s rough and it’s hard. But they put the time in and proved they can do it.”
As a parent, Jones knows she can’t get on the mat during a match or take a test for her kids. But she still does what she can to support them every day.
“I start every day praying for my kids,” she says. “I really try, and we don’t all succeed every single day, but I try to let them know that they can do anything they set their mind to. All I expect from them, is their best. Their best is not somebody else’s best but I expect them to put their all into what every they are doing.
Along with Andrew, Ashley and her husband Dustin have 10-year-old twins, Abigail and Derek. Derek currently wrestles through the Roller Academy of Wrestling in Bixby. Abigail is a cheerleader and did wrestle for a couple of years before turning her focus to cheer.
If being a wife and mother of three didn’t keep Jones busy enough, she also helps coach Abigail’s cheer team and is the Executive Vice President of Finance for Simple Simon’s Pizza.
Congratulations to Ashley Jones on being the Bixby Mom of the Month.
